Based on crucial up-to-date investment criteria, ICA publishes a weekly ranking, highlighting the competitiveness of cities and countries globally. European City Competitiveness
Source : LocationSelector 2010 This week's rankings for the European City Competitiveness: In the past year, the European Union has been in the spotlight, with growing attention to its Southern Member States. Increasing debt levels in Greece, Spain and Portugal, have led to growing concerns among investors and monetary policy makers. The European Union in conjunction with IMF responded with a significant recovery plan. How does the competitiveness of Northern and Southern capital cities reflect the current situation in the European Union? Based on comparative data focusing on accessibility, general business environment indicators, inward FDI flows, quality of infrastructure, macro economic indicators, prices for commercial and residential real estate and taxes, there is an obvious distinction between North and South. Amsterdam is ranked first followed by Berlin and Stockholm. The city of Oslo is the only Northern city that is not in the top five, due to relatively poor accessibility, relatively high real estate costs and relatively low levels of inward FDI flows. On the other hand, Madrid (5th place) is leading the southern capitals in terms of competitiveness, followed by Lisbon, and Rome. Although in last position, Athens is (slowly) recovering from the hard hit it suffered. Nevertheless, major reforms are in place to provide a sustainable platform for future growth.
