Microsoft and research financier FOM, the Foundation for Fundamental Research on Matter, will each invest 1 million Euros in TU Delft’s research into parts for quantum computers. Money will be allocated to the group of physicsprofessor Leo Kouwenhoven. In the next 2 years the research will see the development of particles that can serve as qubits for a future quantum computer, these particles are called majorana fermionen. Qubits are particles that can exist in two different stages at once. This superposition makes them suitable as building blocks for computers that can compute much faster than contemporary computer that compute with bits composed of 0’s and 1’s. The problem with qubits is that they are susceptible to disruptions. Majorana particles according to Kouwenhoven are a lot more stable. The research contract will be signed in a couple of weeks time, at the occasion of which an official statement will be released. The actual quantum computer might take 20 years to see development.
