Metropolitan Region Eindhoven

Metropolitan Eindhoven

Description of the region:

Eindhoven is the 5th city of the Netherlands according to population. Recent census conducted by the municipality shows close to a quarter of a million inhabitants. This makes it the largest city of the Brabant region.  The industrial rise was spearheaded by companies such as DAF Trucks and Philips who have both contributed significantly to employment in the region. The research divisions off Philips are still located in Eindhoven. Suppliers also contribute greatly to employment in the region. This has resulted in a large highly skilled workforce. Large companies such as ASML (chips) and VDL (transport) are important players in the region. Eindhoven has a relatively young population caused primarily by the students attending the Eindhoven University of Technology, the Fontys Highschools and the Design Academy. The latter is an institute of world renown housed in the former Philips factories in the center of Eindhoven. The courses focus mainly on industrial design. Eindhoven has its own airport (largely owned by Schiphol Group) and is used by both civil aviation as well as military aviation of the Royal Air force of the Netherlands. It caters to over 1,5 million passengers a year.
The Eindhoven University of Technology has nine faculties including: Biomedical Technology, Architecture Building and Planning, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Design, Chemical Technology, Technical Physics, Industrial Engineering & Innovation Sciences, Mechanical Engineering and Mathematics and Computing.
