01 February 2010

Thursday 28 January Holland Gateway hosted the green energy seminar. The event saw the gathering of some of the most significant players in the field of renewable/sustainable energy in the Netherlands. Two speakers committed themselves to providing an illuminating discourse on recent developments in the field. Renowned professor and engineer Pier Vellinga regaled the crowd with his ample experience and insight in light of the aftermath of the Copenhagen conference. In his discourse entitled “Climate Change - Risks and Opportunities after Copenhagen” he laid out his eagerly awaited opinion on the Copenhagen talks.

Pier Vellinga explained that even though the UN’s binding agreement had failed, commitments had been made to reduce the level of emissions even further.

The second speaker was Jaap Olthoff Msc., one of the most influential players in the development and exploitation of offshore wind energy parks. In his presentation “Offshore Wind energy from a Dutch perspective” he demonstrated his extensive expertise in explaining more about the creation of the Offshore wind park Egmond aan Zee and the ongoing development of the Dutch Beaufort Project. The crowd eager to acquire this knowledge was composed of important dignitaries from embassies (among others) of China, France, Germany and Vietnam. Various representatives of educational institutes, commercial entities and NGO’s also attended.
